The Story of Coyote
The great wolf ran in the sky all the days of the world, and some before and some after. One time there were many packs roaming the forests of the world. There was plenty of room for all the running and more, there was more food than there were bellies and it was a time of great happiness. But then the great wolf saw how the fat and lazy people of the world had become. They forgot to worship him because they had nothing they wanted. He grew sad and then angry. His teeth shone in the night sky while he thought up a plan. “I will teach you to appreciate me!” he growled. And to the people of the world in sounded like thunder. The wise ones were afraid and saw many bad signs. For a summer or more nothing changed. AND THEN! A new creature began to show it’s face in the forests. It was Coyote! At first the people said “oh what is this new food!? It looks tasty and I am so bored of the stag and the rabbit!” and the people tried to eat Coyote. But Coyote was fast and clever, not very strong but very very tricky! He laughed at the people who were too fat and lazy to catch him and eat him. “HAHA!” Said coyote “The great one sent me and now this is my world not yours!” He stole from the people and he set fires to the trees and he danced and laughed the whole time! Soon Coyotes family was huge and they all bullied the people. “So this is our punishment for not giving proper worship to the great one!” howled the people. And they lamented the loss of the world to such a despicable little creature such as coyote. But one of the wise women shook her finger at them and her fur bristled. “you would believe the words of this little trickster!? He has said nothing but lies to us. I say that the great one sent him not to take over the world but to make us lean and clever again, so we may catch him and his family and gobble them down! We are still his children, but fat and lazy children who need to prove we can still fight and win!” she was a very wise woman and her name was Grisella and all the packs followed her word. They gathered up and chased and fought and worked as one big pack! Even the wanderers were allowed to come into the family to fight! For this was a big and important job. Soon Coyotes family was small again and they shivered in caves and under fallen trees. Hiding from the pack who had grown strong and lean and clever again from the chase and the hunt and the flesh of his people. We will never grow stupid and fat again! They cried. We will never forget your lesson great one! One day when the people had split back off into their packs and were wandering, finishing off the last few pups and elders of coyotes family, one pack found a village called Even. They chased down the one they found there and didn’t fall for any tricks at all. Not pit traps or metal snapping jaws or any of the others. And in the biggest hut they found Coyote himself! The leader of the pack was named “Taroon” and he was a good leader and clever and strong. He was very happy to be the one to kill coyote at last and knew his name would be remembered! He said to Coyote “We have chased down all of your family coyote! We have become lean and clever again! Thank you!” and then he snapped his jaws and coyote was dead. When all the bodies lay out on the ground the pack sang a song. For they believed that the coyote had fought cleverly and well. But coyote had one more trick up his sleeve! Before the pack had finished singing and started eating, the coyote and his family started to stand up! And come back to life! Coyote said to Taroon “Now we are stronger and smarter than ever!” and the people became afraid. They had never seen food walk again. But Coyote said he was sorry for all the trouble and he and Taroon made a pact, so that coyotes risen family and the people could live in harmony. And that is why we call Coyotes risen family “Little brother” and “Little sister” and why we must be kind to them and not hurt them unless we need to, but also we do not trust them! For they are still his sons and daughters and they are still tricky and quick. And the great one was happy for the time. He was trying to teach the burden of being a god and not trying to take away the world at all! The great one still bares his teeth in the night sky to remind us of that time, and that if we forget him again he will teach us more lessons. Coyotes are still food but not the risen ones and this is the will of the world.
